UNITED STATES ARMY BUGLE CALLS
 

Bugle calls are musical signals that announce scheduled and certain non-scheduled events on an Army installation. Today the sound of the bugle is heard across Army Forts from early morning to late at night. Literally, the bugle regulates the soldier's day. In a bow to the modern electronic age, the calls are recorded, then broadcast on schedule through loudspeakers located around the post. Scheduled calls are prescribed by the commander and normally follow the sequence shown below.  Non-scheduled calls are sounded by the direction of the commander.

DAILY SEQUENCE OF BUGLE CALLS

1.
05:50 FIRST CALL  Sounded as a warning that personnel will prepare to assemble for a formation.
14.
13:00 DRILL CALL** Sound as a warning to go out for drill.
2.
06:00 REVEILLE Signals the troops to awaken for morning roll call. Used to accompany the raising of the National Colors.
15.
16:25 ASSEMBLY  Signals troops to assemble at a designated place.
3.
06:55 ASSEMBLY  Signals troops to assemble at a designated place.
16.
16:30 RECALL  Signals duties or drills to cease.
4.
07:00 MESS CALL (morning) Signals mealtime.
17.
16:50 FIRST CALL  Sounded as a warning that personnel will prepare to assemble for a formation.
5.
07:30 SICK CALL** Signals all troops needing medical attention to report to the dispensary.
18.
16:55 ASSEMBLY  Signals troops to assemble at a designated place.
6.
GUARD MOUNTING (when scheduled) Sound as a warning that the guard is about to be assembled for guard mount.
19.
17:00 RETREAT Signals the end of the official day.
7.
FIRST SERGEANT'S CALL** Signals that the First Sergeant is about to form the company.
20.
(follows Retreat) TO THE COLORS To the Colors is a bugle call to render honors to the nation. It is used when no band is available to render honors, or in ceremonies requiring honors to the nation more than once. To the Colors commands all the same courtesies as the National Anthem.

08:55 ASSEMBLY  Signals troops to assemble at a designated place.
21.
17:30 MESS CALL (evening) Signals mealtime.
9.
09:00 DRILL CALL** Sound as a warning to go out for drill.
22.
21:00 TATTOO Signals that all light in squad rooms be extinguished and that all loud talking and other disturbances be discontinued within 2 hours.
10.
OFFICER'S CALL** Signals all officers to assemble at a designated place.
23.
22:45 CALL TO QUARTERS  Signals all personnel not authorized to be absent to their quarters for the night.
11.
11:30 RECALL** Signals duties or drills to cease.
24.
23:00 TAPS Signals that unauthorized lights are to be extinguished. This is the last call of the day. The call is also sounded at the completion of a military funeral ceremony.
12.
11:45 MAIL CALL  Signals personnel to assemble for the distribution of mail.
13.
12:00 MESS CALL (noon) Signals mealtime.

SUNDAY SEQUENCE OF BUGLE CALLS

1.
FIRST CALL  Sounded as a warning that personnel will prepare to assemble for a formation.
5.
ASSEMBLY  Signals troops to assemble at a designated place.
2.
REVEILLE Signals the troops to awaken for morning roll call. Used to accompany the raising of the National Colors.
6.

ADDITIONAL BUGLE CALLS

ADJUTANT'S CALL (parade only) Signals that the adjutant is about to form the guard, battalion, or brigade. The bugler plays the bugle part of the call.
2.
ATTENTION Sound as a warning that troops are about to be called to attention.
